I met Jeff through my brother Jerry in grade school.  One day they were kidding around at our house.  Suddenly, Jeff took a big bite out of Jerry's plastic "Sinclair Gas" green dinosaur!  Jerry and I playfully wrestled Jeff down.  There wasn't much Jeff could do because he was laughing so hard.  That's when I frist noticed Jeff eyes would close whenever he would smile or laugh.  That's how I remember Jeff... smiling and laughing.

Jeff and I were very close friends especially in Kindergarten at Clark Elementary School but also on through Hixson Jr. High and WGHS.  In elementary school I practically lived at the Hilliar's house in the Summer.  Jeff's dad's name was Victor who was apparently also quite an athlete at Maplewood HS and later owned a used car lot in downtown Maplewood (Vic's Auto Sales) and built and entered a stock car that his driver raced at Lakehill Speedway that was near Valley Park.  Jeff's mom's name was Evelyn and he had older twin sisters, Sandy and Judy as well as much older half-brothers.  The Hilliar's had an old worn-out 30' long wooden farmer's type shed in their back yard.  When Judy and Sandy were seniors at WGHS they talked their parents into tearin it down and domating the wood to be used for the Turkey Day bonfire.

We went our separate ways after HS but met occasionally at Mizzou, as he was on the football team there in a separate dorm for athletes so I didn't see him much then.  He eventually transfered to SEMO and played football there as well. In elementary school, I remember Jeff Hilliar, Hugh Fletcher, Brian Carlson, Jim Hadley and several others playing pick-up tackle football on our lunch recess nearly every day.  But unfortunitely some school district-wide PE instructor showed up one day and put a stop to us playing tackle and made us swtich to touch football.  Jeff was the best all-around athlete that I ever met, extremely fast and muscular who was completely "ripped' even in elemetary school whithout even lifting weights.  I remember him hitting a home run at Memorial Field that landed half-way between the edge of the outfield and the public swimming pool.  Jeff's dad got me, Jeff and maybe others to join the Fellowship of Christian Athletes that had an annual banquet where we me Cardinals football star, Jim Hart, and and some other pro athletes.

Jeff was a great friend and always watched out for me. It was so sad to hear of his passing, especially at such a young age.  I was fortunite to know Jeff so well and spend so much time growing up with him.
